Egypt has been banned from weightlifting World Championships for doping offences – based on state press – and might be suspended from Tokyo 2020.
Several Egyptian weightlifters were for the whole world championships, which begin on Wednesday in Thailand around the entry record, but had been missing as soon as the competition’s start book was released on Tuesday.
“The ban is for two decades and this usually means that we will not be able to participate in the Olympics,” Sherif El-Erian, the secretary general of Egypt’s Olympic Committee, told Al-Ahram paper.
The International Wrestling Federation (IWF) hasn’t confirmed that the ban but its principles state any nation coming three or more positive tests within a year faces sanction.
In 2016, five Egyptian kids, for example two girls, failed doping tests at Cairo in the African Youth and Junior Championships.
“Once we get a formal letter concerning the ban, we will do our best to address the tragedy,” additional El-Erian.
The World Championships are the most important qualifying event for Tokyo 2020.
Sara Ahmed and rio 2016 medallists Mohamed Ehab have been set to be their country’s strongest medal contenders in Tokyo.
